Density and temperature of Ne metastables produced in a radio frequency reactor with neon as working gas were spatially investigated by means of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). The experiments have been performed in the PULVA1 reactor which is designed for the study of complex (dusty) plasma. The plasma glow was located in the region above the planar aluminum rf-electrode (Ø 130mm). The wall of the spherically shaped reactor vessel (Ø 400mm) served as grounded electrode. The 13.56 MHz rf-power was supplied by a generator in combination with an automatic matching network. The rf discharge power was varied between 1 and 50 W.

The interaction of the micro-sized particles confined in radio frequency plasma with the plasma was investigated. Silicon oxide particles with a diameter of 10 µm were trapped in the sheath above the rf electrode. The observations provide evidence for a significant interaction between metastable atoms and injected micro-disperse powder particles which are important for energy transfer from plasma to the particles
