Reduced description of complex systems — •Shalva Amiranashvili, Svetlava Gurevich, and Hans-Georg Purwins — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Münster, Germany

We discuss how to reduce the complexity of a spatially extended dissipative system on the example of a glow discharge system. The latter exhibits the formation of dissipative solitons in the form of current spots, e.g., anode spots. Starting from the basic discharge equations we systematically derive the reduced model and quantitatively compare the corresponding solutions with the numerical solutions of the original system. We also discuss No-dqslowNo-dq physical phenomena that can be properly investigated only within the reduced equations, e.g., the expansion of the spots and the velocity selection problem.
