Recently, experiments have been performed where thin foils of saran were irradiated by an intense laser beam [1]. The emitted X-ray spectrum was investigated to develop X-ray probes for Compton scattering on warm dense plasma. The Kα line of chlorine at 2623 eV is of particular interest since it has suitable features. Using theoretical considerations we will investigate the influence of ionization, as well as the formation of a hot, dense plasma on the shape of the spectral line and a possible shift. In contrast to the width of spectral lines (pressure broadening), the shift of spectral lines in dense plasma has only been investigated for some special contexts due to the requirement of more advanced theoretical approaches. Considering theories of scattering by electrons in the unified (as well as impact) approximation within the so-called no- quenching approximation, no shift at all is obtained. More consistent treatments have been elaborated recently [2,3]. We will show that an estimation based on a simplified treatment of shift of electron bound states due to screening in a dense plasma leads to a line shift at high plasma densities. An approach for a more consistent quantum statistical treatment of the profile of spectral lines will be discussed.
