Equation of state for dense helium — •Volker Schwarz and Ronald Redmer — Universität Rostock, Institut für Physik, 18051 Rostock

To model interiors of Giant Planets accurate knowledge of the equation of state (EOS) for hydrogen, helium, and hydrogen-helium mixtures is required for pressures up to several megabars and temperatures up to several thousand Kelvin. While the EOS of hydrogen is the subject of lively discussions, not much attention has been paid so far to the EOS of helium. We start from the Ornstein-Zernicke equation for the pair correlation function. This equation is solved using the HNC closure relation and an iterative scheme. Effective pair potentials are used to model the interactions between helium atoms. We present results for the EOS of pure atomic helium and compare with previous calculations using fluid variational theory and results of shock-wave experiments. Especially, the Hugoniot curves are discussed up to high pressures in the megabar range.
