The commissioning of the fast repetitive multi-pulse edge Thomson scattering system in December 2005 will provide a sophisticated tool for the study of plasma wall interaction phenomena at TEXTOR tokamak. Its high spatial and temporal resolution and the more sensitive viewing optics are the main advantages of the new system. The diagnostic combines the ability to study the dynamic behaviour of fast plasma phenomena with a relatively high spatial resolution. The system utilizes a ruby laser capable of delivering 3 bursts of 30 pulses each with a pulse energy of about 15 J. The TEXTOR plasma is part of the 18 m long laser cavity allowing high laser energies and multiple passes of each laser pulse through the plasma. The core system, in operation since December 2003, provides electron temperature and density profiles along the full plasma diameter (900 mm) with 120 spatial channels of 7.5 mm each. The new edge system (160 mm) has 98 spatial channels of 1.7 mm each. Observational errors of 8% on the electron temperature (Te) and 4% on the electron density (ne) at ne = 2.5 10 19 m−3 for laser energies of more than 15 J have been achieved for the core system where the accuracies of the edge system are expected to be marginally better.
