Exploiting particle flow with a hadronic calorimeter prototype for ILC — •erika garutti — DESY, Notkestr. 85, 22607 Hamburg

The ILC, is an e+e- collider of the next generation. This machine and its experiments will operate at the forefront of science and provide novel and deep insight into the most fundamental aspects of nature, complementing and extending the capabilities of the LHC. Among the most fundamental questions of particle physics is that of the origin of the breaking of the electroweak symmetry, and the existence of possible new symmetries. Answering these questions requires new investigative methods, combined with the most advanced detector technologies. The development of a particular new approach, called particle flow, is essential for the experimental program and requires the synergy of detector R&D, and software and simulation developments. A particular challenge in this context is the design and the construction of the calorimeter, a system able to measure the energy of each particle product of the e+e- collision. The calorimeter detector plays a crucial role for the shower separation in multi-jet final state events. A device with unprecedented granularity and resolution is required. The construction of optimized calorimeter prototypes for the study of shower reconstruction and for the understanding of shower models is mandatory for the success of the ILC project. This talk will outline the requirements imposed on the detector design by the physics of interest at the ILC, and will present the idea and the steps required for the validation of the particel flow approach.
