Direct Cherenkov light from primary cosmic ray particles: first measurement with H.E.S.S. — •Rolf Bühler and Jim Hinton — MPIK Saupfercheckweg 1 69117 Heidelberg

In the regime above 10 TeV the mass composition of cosmic rays becomes rather uncertain. Above this energy the small collection area of balloon and satellite detectors limits the sensitivity of the conventional approach of direct particle detection. A potentially powerful alternative technique for the measurement of heavy (Z>10) cosmic ray nuclei is the ground level measurement of the (direct) Cherenkov light emitted by the primary nucleus. Here we present the first results on a study of direct Cherenkov emission with the H.E.S.S. telescope array.
