QED Corrections to Top Pair Production at the LHC — •Monika Kollár and Wolfgang Hollik — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, München, Germany

Precise understanding of the Standard Model (SM) processes as the main source of background to potential physics beyond the SM is crucial for the LHC. In this context the top quark sector plays an important role due to the large top pair production rate which is expected to be of about 8 million tt pairs per year.

The QED corrections which form a substantial subclass of the electroweak effects at the 1-loop level are characterized by infrared (IR) and collinear singularities. The IR divergences are canceled in the sum of virtual corrections and the soft part of real corrections. The collinear divergences which appear as mass singular terms are handled by absorbing them into the parton distribution functions at the NLO QED level.

Presented and discussed are the soft and the collinear bremsstrahlung contributions to tt production in proton-proton collisions together with the virtual QED corrections. Also the noncollinear part of the hard photon spectrum is included in the calculation and standard cuts on the final state particles are applied to obtain experimentally realistic results.
