Determination of the Sagitta-Resolution for Muon Tracks in MDT Chambers — •Matthias Schott and Günter Duckeck — Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Am Coulombwall 1, 85748 Garching

In the Cosmic Ray Measurement Facility in Garching an ATLAS Monitored Drift Tube Chamber (MDT Chamber) is sandwiched between two reference chambers. Data are collected originating from cosmic muons. The goal of the project is twofold: commissioning and calibration of ATLAS muon chambers, and the development of calibration and track reconstruction procedures. As no magnetic field is applied in this measurement facility, muon tracks are straight lines apart from multiple scattering. Any deviation from a straight line would signal systematic distortions in the chamber.

The sagitta of the tracks is a useful measure of such potential distortions which would mimic a curvature of the tracks. A sagitta of zero is expected if no significant distortions are present in the chambers. In this talk the sagitta resolution is simulated and compared with real events. The good agreement of simulated and real data proves the good understanding of the MDT-chambers. Based on this various other effects on the sagitta and the momentum resolution of the MDT-chambers in the measurement facility and in the Atlas detector were simulated. In particular effects of multiple scattering, single tube resolution and alignment will be discussed.
