Improvements in muon reconstruction efficiency in ATLAS detector from the multi-hit capability of front end electronics — •Chrysostomos Valderanis, Oliver Kortner, Hubert Kroha, and Robert Richter — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, München

The open structure of the ATLAS muon spectrometer, intended to provide the capability of stand-alone muon measurements, leaves the spectrometer vulnerable to neutron and gamma background escaping the calorimeters. The expected rates for this backgrounds leads to decreased performance of the muon spectrometer due to accidental hits. Based on data taken at the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) at CERN we discuss the possibility improving the reconstruction efficiency of muons if we take into account in the reconstruction program the multi-hit capability of the readout electronics of the muon drift tube chambers of the ATLAS detector.
