Cooling of Highly-Charged Ions in a Penning Trap: — •Giancarlo Maero1, Frank Herfurth1, H.-Jürgen Kluge1, Stefan Schwarz2, and Günther Zwicknagel31GSI Darmstadt, Germany — 2MSU, East Lansing, USA — 3Universität Erlangen, Germany

HITRAP will be a facility able to slow down and cool heavy, highly charged ions up to U92+ for low and ultralow energy physic investigation such as collision studies, precision measurements and QED tests. Ions stripped of all electrons will be slowed down by an IH-Linac and an RFQ. In a subsequent Penning trap their energy will be taken down to 4 K via electron and resistive cooling. The storage of 105 ions and 1010 electrons in the trap volume requires to simulate the dynamics of the processes that take place in the trap from injection to extraction. We focus on the equilibrium conditions of the ion cloud under the effect of both the external and space charge potentials, starting after electron cooling has ended.
