Time-of-flight mass spectrometry is employed to monitor the laser induced desorption of organic molecules and organometallic complexes from solid surfaces in a UHV setup. The molecules, in particular cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (cymantrene) CpMn(CO)3, are deposited by means of a pulsed valve either to a metallic Mo(100) surface or to an insulating surface that consists of Mo(100) covered by a few monolayers of magnesium oxide. Surface characterization prior to the laser desorption experiments is performed by thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). First results on photo-dissociation of CpMn(CO)3 molecules and fragment desorption will be presented in conjunction with a comparison between the light induced dissociation of free and supported CpMn(CO)3 molecules.
