Manufacturing and Micro Structuring Ultrathin Low Loss Optical Fibers — •Michael Pöllinger, Florian Warken, Guillem Sagué, Wolfgang Alt, Dietmar Haubrich, Dieter Meschede, and Arno Rauschenbeutel — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Universität Bonn, Wegelerstrasse 8, 53115 Bonn

Tapered optical fibers offer interesting perspectives for controlling and confining light fields. We have set up a fiber pulling device to fabricate ultrathin tapered fibers with low losses. In such fibers a considerable amount of the optical energy propagates in the evanescent field outside the fiber body. This field can be employed for a number of applications, ranging from atom traps to molecular spectroscopy.

Furthermore, we apply a focused CO2 laser beam to microstructure the tapered fibers. Confinement of light in fiber-based whispering gallery mode resonators should become possible this way [1]. Special attention is paid to the minimization of losses due to impurities and surface roughness. Microresonator Q-factors in the range of 108−109 should thus be acchievable.

Financial support by the DFG research unit 557 is gratefully acknowledged.
