Giant magnetic fields of the order of 104 T are expected to be created by the interaction of an ultra-short, ultra-intense laser pulse with matter. We report on the preliminary results of an experiment where the Zeeman effect in the X-ray range was exploited to monitor the quasi static magnetic field, created by the interaction of an 80 fs, 1 J Ti:sapphire laser pulse with solid matter. The involved laser intensities ranged between 1018 and 5· 1019 W/cm2. The targets were Ti foils of different thicknesses (2, 5, 25 µm). We monitored the X-ray emissions of the Kα 1 and Kα 2 lines by means of a spectrometer with 0.3 eV energy resolution and 4 µm spatial resolution. The spectrometer was composed by a toroidally bent GaAs crystal and a Si plane crystal in dispersionless setup at 45, working as polarizer, to distinguish contribution to the line broadening coming from other mechanisms. In addition we used an electron spectrometer to determine the hot electron energy. The role of possible further mechanisms leading to the observed line broadening are discussed.
