A laser-based plasma source for the generation of hard X-ray pulses is presented. The 28 fs pulses of a Ti:Sapphire laser with repetition rates of up to 15 kHz are applied. A pulse energy of 1 mJ is possible up to repetition rates of 10 kHz. Different metal tape targets for the production of Kα radiation and bremsstrahlung are used. The source is used in transmission geometry in order to avoid time jitter of the X-ray pulses relative to the fundamental beam. Using single pulse exposure X-ray photon fluxes of more then 2×109 Cr Kα and more then 3×109 Fe Kα photons per second in 4π steradian are achieved. We have shown earlier with a 1 kHz system that an exposure with a prepulse can enhance the X-ray yield up to two orders of magnitude [1]. Using a toroidally bent Si(311) crystal a focusing of the X-ray photons down to a spot diameter of 80 µm is achieved. First experiments with Bragg diffraction in an GaAs(111) crystal are demonstrated.
