Halogen compounds and nitrogen oxides have a significant impact on the global ozone budget. A possible background of reactive bromine compounds in the free troposphere could additionally influence the ozone budget and thus global climate. Within the frame of CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container), a new DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) instrument was built. It collects uv-visible scattered sun light from three different viewing directions. With this Multi-Axis technique the separation of boundary layer, free tropospheric and stratospheric columns is possible. Besides BrO, other trace gases, such as HCHO, NO2, O3, or water vapour can be measured and in addition O4 as a tracer for the light path distribution. This DOAS instrument is the only remote sensing instrument in a cargo container that comprises 21 instruments of 11 European institutions and that has been successfully put into operation on a new long-range Airbus (A340-600) of Deutsche Lufthansa in December 2004. Since May 2005 regular flights with fully automated measurements are performed once a month. We will present selected results from all measurement flights up to now and show the potential of this unique DOAS data set.
