Improved threat detection in airplane baggage using Coherent Scatter CT — •Jens-Peter Schlomka, Axel Thran, Udo van Stevendaal, Hans Barschdorf, and Rüdiger Grewer — Philips Research Laboratories Hamburg

Contemporary baggage inspection systems show rather high false alarm rates because the information gained from X-ray transmission images or CT are not specific enough. As consequence, a rather costly multi-level inspection chain has to be implemented. This can be overcome by combining transmission and diffraction information in a single machine. This technique called ’Coherent Scatter Computed Tomography’ (CSCT) is an X-ray imaging technique combining X-ray scattering with Computed Tomography (CT). In contrast to conventional CT, CSCT allows more precise material identification based on the molecular structure of the object under investigation.

The physical background of this technique and the work carried out at Philips Research will be presented. Furthermore, an overview of Philips Research activities will be given.
