Development of the Straw Tube Tracker for the proposed PANDA detector at GSI — •Andrei Sokolov, James Ritman, and Peter Wintz — Institute für Kernphysik I, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich

One of the components of the approved extension to the accelerator facility at GSI/Darmstadt is a storage ring for high luminosity phase space cooled antiprotons with momenta between 1.0 and 15 GeV/c. Antiproton annihilation reactions on protons and nuclei will be investigated with a detector system called PANDA. It is currently being considered to build a Straw Tube Tracker (STT) as the central tracking device. The STT will consist of the 11 double layers. The straws will have diameters 8 and 10 mm. The STT needs high rate capabilities to handle the high events rate (107 events/s) and a high position resolution (σrφ∼ 150µ m, σz ∼ mm). In the base design the logitunial coordinate is determined by skewing the straw tubes with respect to the beam axis. However, to simplify the overall design and to allow on-line position determination, other methods such as time difference and charge division are being explored.

This talk will present an overview of the simulations and prototyping performed to investigate the performance of the STT for PANDA. Supported in part by BMBF and FZ-Juelich.
