Micro plasma assisted sub-nanosecond switching has been a particular interest in our research study to increase the up to now known values of the pulse repetition rate (PRR) for plasma closing switches. For this purpose, we have studied a high-pressure spark gap switch. The operation of our spark gap is subjected to a free-running mode, DC voltage stress and accompanied by a free voltage recovery process. We made an analytical approach based on common discharge gap characteristics and physical limitations of the recovery process in the electrode gap. We put forth a novel circuit topology to increase the efficiency of charging the spark gap at the high PRR. We focused our work on reducing the charge content of pulsed plasmas. Several spark gap parameters such as electrode material, electrode gap geometry, gap distance, gas type and gas pressure were varied. The physical breakdown behavior in the discharge gap due to these parameters was investigated. The optimized parameters led to a more controlled performance of pulsing micro plasmas in the spark gap. The charging efficiency exceeded 50 %. The efficiency of the charge transfer in the load impedance exceeded 95 %. We will present an overview for the characteristics of pulsed micro plasmas in the spark gap.
