Study of high density plasmas driven by 10-fs laser pulses via XUV spectroscopy — •Mirela Cerchez, Jens Osterholz, and Oswald Willi — Heinrich Heine University, Dusseldorf, Germany

High density plasmas produced by interaction of short laser pulses with solid targets represent a large interest for fundamental physics studies and applications. High contrast sub-10 fs laser pulses, with intensities up to 10^16 W*cm-2, have been focused on different low Z solid targets. Time integrated K shell emission plasma spectroscopy has been used to record the series limits for H-like and He-like resonance lines of carbon, boron nitride and lithium fluoride. The limits are explained by pressure ionization, a typical effect of high density plasmas. In addition, experimental investigations of plasma emission created by laser pulses onto lithium fluoride targets coated with aluminum have been performed. Time dependent synthetic spectra have been simulated in order to analyze the temporal evolution of the resonance emission lines starting from close to solid density and have been compared with the experimental results. The analysis indicates that close to solid density plasmas with very steep density gradients are produced.
