The rapid progress in the field of laser particle acceleration has stimulated a wide debate about the perspectives of laser driven particle sources. The acceleration of MeV-protons from thin foil targets is well understood and depends strongly on various laser and target parameters, such as foil thickness, pulse duration and pulse contrast.

Up to this point, the pursuit of any application has been restricted by the inevitably broad energy distribution of the generated protons beams. In recent experiments, special target geometries were applied to produce monoenergetic proton and ion beams for the first time. We demonstrate how with the help of laser ablation on a microstructured foil surface it is possible to improve the acceleration process substantially and create reliably high quality proton beams with narrow energy distribution. Monoenergetic proton beams with peak energies at about 2 MeV and less than 10% energy bandwidth were achieved, containing about 109 protons per laser shot. The reproducibility of the monoenergetic spectra exceeds 80%.
