H.E.S.S. observations of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 — •Matthias Kerschhaggl1, Marianne Lemoine-Gourmard2, and Ullrich Schwanke1 for the H.E.S.S. collaboration — 1Institut fuer Physik, Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin, Deutschland — 2Laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet, IN2P3/CNRS, Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France
In this talk the recent results from the very high energy (VHE) gamma ray observation of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 (Vela Junior) as performed by the Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope System H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) between December 2004 and May 2005 will be presented. The data set resulting from a total observation time of 33 h permitted the morphological as well as spectral study of this object with unprecedented accuracy. The observed morphological and spectral features are combined with data from other wavelengths and will be interpreted in terms of the possible origins of the VHE gamma ray emission, i.e. Inverse Compton scattering of energetic electrons or the decay of neutral pions produced by proton interactions.
