Radio Detection of Extended Air Showers induced by Cosmic Rays - Measurements of the Radio Background — •Tobias Winchen, Martin Erdmann, and Matthias Leuthold for the Pierre Auger collaboration — III. Physikalisches Institut A, RWTH Aachen, 52062 Aachen

The Pierre Auger Observatory hosts the largest detectors for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) currently taking data. Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) hitting the Earth's atmosphere induce Extended Air Showers (EAS). The showers are observed with an air fluorescence detector and an array of water-Cherenkov counters at the ground.

Another way to observe EAS is the detection of the coherent synchrotron radiation emitted by the charged shower particles propagating through the Earth's magnetic field. The Pierre Auger Collaboration is currently investigating the possibility to construct a detector for the radio signal from cosmic rays with energies above 10^19 eV.

One major constraint on the detectability is the intensity of the ambient noise on site. In this talk measurements of the continuous radio background in Malargue/Argentinia will be presented.
