Response of the high granularity scintillator tile hadron calorimeter to muons: calibration issues — •Nicola D’Ascenzo for the CALICE DESY collaboration — DESY, 22603 Hamburg

A prototype of the tile hadron calorimeter for the International Linear Collider was designed and assembled in DESY and recently tested at the CERN test beam facility. It consists on 23 fully equipped lead/scintillator layers. The active region is characterized by a very high granularity - 3× 3 cm2 tiles in the inner core, 6× 6 cm2 and 12× 12 cm2 in the periferical region individually read out by novel Geiger mode photo diodes (SiPMs). The imaging properties of the calorimeter allow to identify the tracks left by muons with high precision. Furthermore, a clean muon signal, in each tile, can be measured. Therefore muons were used to calibrate each cell of the calorimeter in terms of most probable visible energy deposided by a minimum ionizing particle. On the other side, while in the particle flow concept the main task of the hadron calorimeter is the response to hadrons, and in the LDC detector design a muon chamber exists, this study put in evidence that also a high granular hadron calorimeter can be used for muon identification. The systematics and stability of this measurement, as well as the comparison with Monte Carlo prediction is shown in detail.
