Open Access - free, online access to scholarly research output - is now becoming a reality. It has many advantages for science and many opportunities for publishers, universities and learned societies. The physics community has been in the vanguard of this movement and has much to teach us about how to provide an effective and efficient scholarly communication system. What have we learned so far and where might we be going next?
