The single molecule magnet system [(MnIIL2)3MnII](BF4)2 containing four Mn2+ ions has been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The XPS Mn 2p and Mn 3s spectra confirm the manganese 2+ valency. From XMCD measurements at a temperature of T=2 K and a magnetic field of B=5 T we obtained a high magnetic moment of 12 µB/f.u. This spin moment agrees in an excellent way with magnetic measurements which show a magnetization saturation of 10 µB/f.u. at 7 T and 2 K. From XMCD a quenching of the Mn orbital moments was observed (morb=0.4 µB/f.u.).
