Characterisation of multi-wall carbon nanotubes functionalised with carboxyl groups — •Marcel Himmerlich, Uwe Ritter, Henry Romanus, Juergen A. The impact of nitric acid (HNO3) treatment on the structure, surface composition and surface electronic structure of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is investigated employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, UPS) together with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The investigated MWCNTs have been synthesised at 900C by spray pyrolysis using benzene and 1% ferrocene in an Argon flow. After subsequent purification the samples were functionalised by a treatment with nitric acid at 100C for 2 h. The valence band structures of functionalised and unfunctionalised samples are compared to reference measurements on formic acid (HCOOH) and polyacrylic acid. The analysis of the C1s and O1s core levels together with the observed differences in the valence band structure reveals the formation of carboxyl (-COOH) groups on the nanotubes. TEM measurements indicate that the main reaction takes place at the end of the nanotubes resulting in a cracking of the MWCNT end caps.
