Nuclear safeguards for future fusion reactors — •Martin B. Kalinowski — ZNF, Universität Hamburg

The classical nuclear safeguards provisions do not cover fusion reactors. However, their scope will need to be widened to cover fusion reactors, because they have the technical capability to produce large amounts of plutonium. In addition, control procedures for the fusion fuel tritium might also be considered due to its role in nuclear arsenals. This presentation describes the need for fusion reactor verification. Technical opportunities and challenges will be discussed.
