The interest in the study of laser induced optical breakdown in water and aqueous media is mainly motivated by the applications of ultrashort laser pulses in ocular surgery and in precise ablation of biological tissues [1]. A better knowledge of the breakdown process can contribute to increase the precision of the ablation process and in the same time to decrease the collateral damage associated with it. In previous studies [2] we have shown a dynamics of the free electron breakdown plasma on the ps-time scale. In this contribution we report our recent studies in investigating the transient luminescence of breakdown plasma induced by 30fs laser pulses at the surface of water. By using a fast optical Kerr shutter, transient emission spectra are accurately recorded even in the early times of plasma dynamics and useful information about relaxation and recombination of the free electrons are obtained.
