Optimization and characterization of a new compact laser-plasma based X-ray source — •Wei Lu, Matthieu Nicoul, Uladzimir Shymanovich, Alexander Tarasevitch, Klaus Sokolowski-Tinten, and Dietrich von der Linde — Universität Duisburg-Essen, Institut für Experimentelle Physik, Lotharstr. 1, 47048 Duisburg, Germany

During the interaction of a high intensity laser beam with a solid surface, a plasma is rapidly created which emits ultra-short bursts of Ka X-rays. The Ka yield is determined by the parameters of the driving laser (intensity, angle of incidence, laser polarization) as well as by the properties of the plasma the laser pulse interacts with. In this study we investigated the Ka - emission (8.05 keV) of Cu targets for different excitation and plasma conditions. Based on these results, a compact, 10 Hz repetition rate, Cu band target laser-plasma based X-ray source has been built and characterized. By using a controlled pre-pulse and a multilayer X-ray optic, a monochromatic X-ray beam with a divergence/convergence of only 0.15 deg and more than 10^5 photons/pulse can be delivered to the sample.
