Magnetic High Current Ion Storage Ring — •Martin Droba — IAP, Max-von-Lauestrasse 1, 60438 Frankfurt am Main, Deutschland

A high current storage ring for the accumulation of low energy (W∼150 keV) proton beams is under investigation at Frankfurt University. The configuration based on a toroidal magnetic field looks promising for the storage of intense ion beams, especially when concerning the various potential concepts for space charge compensation. It offers various possibilities for investigation of (p+B11) fusion reactions under different non-neutral plasma state conditions. For the first time a stellarator-type magnetic configuration is considered to store intense ion beams, and to study beam life time, reaction cross sections, reaction products at interacting gas jets as well as ring operation in the collider mode. The theory of thermal and applied plasma confinement on magnetic surfaces is translated to numerical simulations on circulating ion beams. The space charge effects and stability conditions are studied and will be presented. An experimental setup consisting of to 30 toroids and two ion sources is suited to study beam injection into such ring configuration.
