Physical systems are, to a large degree, characterised by the relations and correlations of their parts. In quantum mechanics it is the density matrix that describes the state of a system, and hence its structure and correlations.

In this talk I will show how to use quantum information science to study the structure of a density matrix of several particles. I will illustrate this work with applications in quantum chemistry and quantum cryptography.
