Characterization of the biomass production in photobioreactors using different light scattering methods — •Markus Thürling and Hilmar Franke — department of applied physics, university of Duisburg-Essen, Lotharstr.1, 47057 Duisburg, Germany

The production of biomass using algae in photobioreactors and the photobiological production of hydrogen using cyanobacteria becomes more and more important as a possible alternative renewable energy source. A modern on-line detection system for the growth of the biomass is required. A standard approach is the measurement of the optical density. In this investigation we look into different methods of a more detailed study of biomass growth. These methods are: static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, measurement of the zeta potential, a flow particle image analysis (FPIA), laser diffraction and flow cytometry. Together these methods should allow a more detailed picture of the biomass at a certain level like the number of particles (cells), their size and form. The study has been performed for single cell systems like chlamydomonas or cyanobacteria. Comparing the size distribution and the number of cells with the activity like oxygen production one might be able to find a correlation between dimensions, sizes, forms and status of activity.
