Atomic Oxygen, Hydrogen and Chemical Heating Rates derived by Sciamachy — •Catrin Lehmann1, Martin Kaufmann1, Lars Hoffmann1, Martin Riese1, Christian von Savigny2, Manuel Lopez-Puertas3, and Bernd Funke31Institut für Chemie und Dynamik der Geosphaere, Forschungszentrum Juelich, Juelich, Germany — 2Institut für Umweltphysik, Universitaet Bremen, Bremen, Germany — 3Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia, CSIC, Granada, Spain

The energy budget in the mesopause region is significantly determined by atomic oxygen and atomic hydrogen. Both species can be derived by limb measurements of the Sciamachy instrument onboard the european Envisat satellite. The instrument observes emissions from all vibrational states of OH up to v=9 and so chemical heating rates and atomic oxygen densities can be retrieved in excellent quality. The combination with Gomos star occultation observations of mesospheric ozone gives the opportunity to derive atomic hydrogen densities in the upper mesosphere - lower thermosphere.
