HERA and proton structure — •Daniel Pitzl — DESY Hamburg

After 15 successful years, the HERA electron-proton accelerator at DESY in Hamburg ended its operation on June 30, 2007. It has provided a rich harvest of high quality data with the collider experiments H1 and ZEUS, and the fixed target experiments Hermes (utilizing the polarized electron beam with an internal gas jet target) and HERA-B (utilizing the proton beam with an internal wire target). Highlights and lessons of HERA machine and detector operations will be given. The full datasets are now being processed and analyzed by the collaborations, with first complete results already appearing, even in combination between experiments. While there is no significant signal for physics beyond the standard model, the emphasis is on precision measurements of the proton structure and on tests of QCD at the percent level. A richer picture of the proton has emerged. The results from HERA, especially the extracted parton densities, will be essential for an understanding of the proton-proton reactions at the LHC.
