A High-Resolution Scintillating Fiber Tracker — •Gregorio Roper Yearwood — I. Physikalisches Institut B, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule, Aachen, Deutschland

We present a new modular scintillating fiber tracker with silicon photomultiplier array readout. Each tracker module consists of 5 layers of 250 micron thick, multiclad scintillating fibers of type BCF-20 on each side of a carbon fiber / rohacell foam support structure. The expected spatial resolution for this design is better than 60 microns. The tracker is insensitive to magnetic fields and can be operated in a wide temperature range from -40 degrees Celsius to room temperature. The design has been optimized for a ballone-borne spectrometer (PEBS) to measure the cosmic ray electron- and positron flux up to over 100 GeV. A tracker module of 5 by 32 fibers has been subjected to a beam test at the CERN PS accelerator facility. The complete tracker has been fully simulated in a GEANT4 based Monte-Carlo.
