The German WLCG Tier-1 centre GridKa - preparing for the LHC startup — •Andreas Heiss and Holger Marten — Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Hermann-von-Helmholtz-Platz 1, 76344 Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen

GridKa, the German Tier-1 centre in the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) supports all four LHC experiments, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb as well as currently four non-LHC high energy physics experiments. Several German and European Tier-2 sites depend on GridKa as their associated Tier-1.

The startup of the LHC is a major challenge for all WLCG Grid sites. The Tier-1 centres have to store and distribute RAW and processed data and provide other Grid services with high reliability. While before the LHC startup Monte Carlo production was a prevailing task, the typical use case of the Tier-1 will change. Organized data processing and re-processing will become dominating as soon as the LHC produces data. To fulfil the high computing requirements of the LHC experiments, the current CPU and storage resources of GridKa will be increased by more than a factor of three in 2008.

We give an overview over the various technical aspects of the GridKa centre and report on the progress of the hardware upgrade and the preparations for the arrival of the first data from collisions.
