extraction of the magnetic formfactor and structure function of the n from inclusive lepton scattering data — •Avraham Rinat and Morton Taragin — Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel

We consider the reduced magnetic form factor αn of the n, extracted from QE inclusive lepton scattering, which requires the separation of the QE (NE) and inelastic parts (NI) of structure functions F2A(x,Q2) for the Bjorken variable x≈ 1.The latter dominates, except around the QEP. Previous JLab data [1] primarily on D showed αn(Q2) to decrease from 1to about 0.78 for Q2≈ 1.5−10 GeV2 [2]. Analysis of recent inclusive data on various targets [3] appear to be incompatible with the oldJLab data and can not be used to extract αn [4].

We therefore turned to data on F2D for fixed Q2 [5]. Although scatter is apparent in the above data, we could assemble sufficient data points to determine suitable averages for αn(Q2). For the available range Q2 5.7 GeV2 we confirm the previously observed decrease of αn.

An alternative source of information for αn is the ratio of semi-inclusive cross sections e(D,p)e,n/e(D,n)e,p. A recent experiment shows a flat behaviour for Q2 3.2 GeV2, followed by data points with appreciable scatter out to Q2=5 GeV2 [6].

Inclusive scattering data also contain information on F2n. An extraction method, which has been applied before [7] for the data of Ref. (1), has also been used for those of Ref. (5). Determination of higher twist corrections in F2p,D constitute alternative input for the construction of F2n [8].
