Severely deformed materials attain nowadays a growing technological interest due to their advanced properties and property combinations. In the present study, were focus on the diffusion properties of nanocrystaline NiTi produced by high pressure torsion( HPT) and of ultra-fine grained titanium deformed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). The radiotracer method was used with the radioactive isotopes 44Ni and 44Ti in combination with the parallel sectioning technique. Our results discover the existence of ultra-fast diffusion pathways in HPT-processed NiTi, especially after certain heat treatments. The diffusion data are analysed in relation to the existence of ’non-equilibrium’ grain boundaries in severely deformed materials, but also with respect of the possible presence of a percolating network of nanocracks and nanovoids in severely deformed materials.
