Self Consistent Interaction between Magnetic Islands and Turbulence in Large Tokamaks — •Bruce Scott — Max-Planck-IPP, Euratom Association, Garching, Germany

Turbulence in the tokamak core is studied using three dimensional computations within the low frequency electromagnetic gyrofluid model. The entire background, including the confining magnetic field, is carried self consistently. The gradient of the toroidal current density tends to drive magnetic islands through the tearing mode mechanism, while toroidal compressibility effects (geodesic curvature) is stabilising. Islands are also perturbed by the turbulence. The island structure is found to impose itself only if the associated island current is larger in amplitude than the turbulent current fluctuations. This effectively gives a threshold island width for visible activity. The role of temperature gradients of both ions and electrons in this process is under investigation.
