Investigation of organic liquid-scintillator optical properties — •Jürgen Winter1, Franz von Feilitzsch1, Marianne Göger-Neff1, Timo Lewke1, Teresa Marrodán Undagoitia1,2, Quirin Meindl1, Lothar Oberauer1, Walter Potzel1, Sebastian Todor1, and Michael Wurm11Physik Department E15, Technische Universität München, James-Franck-Str., 85748 Garching — 2Physik-Institut, Universität Zürich, Schweiz

The characterization of different organic liquid-scintillator mixtures is an important step towards the design of a large-scale detector such as LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy). Its physics goals, extending from particle and geological to astrophysical issues, set high demands on the optical properties of the liquid scintillator.

Therefore, small-scale experiments are carried out in order to optimize the final scintillator mixture. PXE, LAB, and dodecane are under consideration as solvents. Setups for the determination of scintillator properties are presented, such as attenuation length, light yield, emission spectra, flourescence decay times, and quenching factors. Furthermore, results are discussed.

This work is supported by funds of the DFG (Transregio 27: Neutrinos and Beyond), the Cluster of Excellence ’Origin and Structure of the Universe’ and the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratorium (Garching).
