Silicon Photomultiplier developement for astroparticle physics applications — •Hiroko Miyamoto1, Masahiro Teshima1, Boris Dolgoshein2, Razmik Mirzoyan1, Jelena Ninkovic1, and Thomas Schweizer11Max-Planck-Institute for Physics, Munich, Germany — 2Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, Moscow, Russia

A Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) is a novel type of photon counting device. It is compact, low cost, fast response (<100ps), with high photon detection efficiency (PDE) and high gain. It also has the big advantage, compared to Photomultiplier Tubes (PMT), of being insensitive to magnetic fields. Several kinds of SiPMs are being developed by Hamamatsu, MPI-HLL (Max-Planck-Institute for Physics - Max-Planck-Institute Semiconductor Laboratory), and MPI-MEPhI (Max-Planck-Institute for Physics - Moscow Engineering Physical Institute) for astroparticle physics applications, i.e., MAGIC, JEM-EUSO and so on. The status of development of SiPMs and their applications will be reported.
