HESS J1503-582: Discovery of VHE Gamma-ray Emission Coincident with a Forbidden-Velocity Wing — •Ryan Chaves and Matthieu Renaud — Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Saupfercheckweg 1, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany

The H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey, the first comprehensive survey of the Galaxy in the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray domain, has led to the discovery of numerous VHE gamma-ray sources. While the majority of these sources are thought to be associated with supernova remnants (SNRs) and energetic pulsars, some of them do not have obvious counterparts at other wavelengths (e.g. radio, infrared or X-ray) and are referred to as "dark" sources. One of these, HESS J1503-582, was recently detected and found to be spatially coincident with the Forbidden-Velocity Wing, FVW 319.8+0.3. FVWs are peculiar 21 cm HI line structures that deviate from the canonical Galactic rotation curve and may be associated with old SNRs in the radiative phase or the wind-blown shells of massive stars or star clusters. A giant molecular cloud is also identified in 12CO at this location at a distance of  13 kpc. We present this recent, unique H.E.S.S. discovery and discuss the various multi-wavelength scenarios.
