Identification of stopping muon tracks in IceCube — •Matthias Schunck, Sebastian Euler, Jan-Patrick Hülß, and Christopher Wiebusch — RWTH Aachen

A novel reconstruction algorithm for the identification of starting muon tracks as a signature of neutrino induced events was developed for the IceCube-DeepCore detector. It is based on a likelihood approach and quantifies the probability of assumed tracks to generate the observed detector signals. This algorithm has been extended to be capable of identifying also stopping tracks. We apply this algorithm to down-going atmospheric muons which stop in IceCube. This is an important experimental verification of the performance of the anticipated analysis strategies for the IceCube-DeepCore optimization. Moreover, the identification of stopping, down-going tracks provides the opportunity to derive an energy spectrum of atmospheric muons from cosmic-ray interactions. In this talk we describe the algorithm and present initial results.
