Development of Low Noise / Low Power Charge Preamplifier for Electromagnetic Calorimeters (EMC)Werner Erni, •Irakli Keshelashvili, Bernd Krusche, and Michael Steinacher — University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland

The discrete charge preamplifier for the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMC) of the PANDA and CBELSA-TAPS experiments has been designed to meet the physics goals. It has excellent signal to noise performance in combination with low power consumption. To reach the required dynamic range for PANDA EMC, between the low detection threshold of 2MeV and maximum deposited energy per crystal of 12GeV, the noise performance of the preamplifier is crucial. Since the complete PANDA EMC, including APDs or VPTs and corresponding preamplifiers, will be cooled to low temperatures (-25oC) to increase the light-yield of the PWO-II crystals, the power dissipation of the preamplifier has to be minimized. Moreover the expected continuous event rate in the forward endcap EMC of 500kHz per crystal is an additional complication, since reducing the feedback time constant of (25µs) would substantially increase the noise. In addition a modified version of the preamplifier for a new APD readout of the Crystal Barrel detector (CsI crystals) was developed. The Gain stabilization is achieved via automatic, temperature based HV adjustment. The poster shows layout of the circuit diagrams based on discrete design which allows easy modification for future development processes. Also some important laboratory measurements will be presented.
