Holography in External Fields and in Time Dependent Backgrounds — •René Meyer — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik (Werner-Heisenberg-Institut), Föhringer Ring 6, 80805 München — Physics Department, University of Crete, P.O. Box 2208, 71003 Heraklion, Crete, Greece

Two of the most outstanding problems in modern theoretical physics are to understand the strongly coupled dynamics of infrared Quantum Chromodynamics, as well as quantum gravitational dynamics near space-time singularities at which the general relativistic description of gravity necessarily breaks down. Holographic methods arising from string theory such as the reformulation of strongly coupled gauge theories in terms of weakly coupled gravity theories via the Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) duality and the description of stringy quantum gravity in different space-times via quantum mechanical models of hermitian matrices shed light on these questions.

In this talk I present three generalisations of holographic theories which were developed in my PhD thesis and shed light on different phenomena. The first part of this talk is concerned with the holographic description of a supersymmetric analogue of Quantum Chromodynamics. I will show how phenomena like magnetically induced chiral symmetry breaking and Schwinger pair production arise holographically, and how supersymmetry and gauge symmetry can be broken. In the second part I present a matrix QM description of quantum gravitational dynamics near the cosmological big bang singularity, and argue that space is an emergent property in this model.
