Extrasolar Planets — •Artie Hatzes — Thueringer Landessternwarte, Tautenburg, Germany

In the past decade the field of exoplanets has evolved into one of the most vibrant and exciting area of astrophysics. Early exoplanet studies could only measure upper limits to the exoplanet mass and to derive basic orbital parameters. Now we are in an era where exoplanets can be characterized in terms of their true mass, radius, density, surface temperature, and atmospheric features. At the forefront of this characterization are the space missions CoRoT and Kepler, the first space telescopes devoted to the search for extrasolar planets via the transit method. I will review the current properties of exoplanets and show that these exhibit a diversity that was unexpected. I will also present exciting new results from the CoRoT and Kepler Missions. Fifteen years after the discovery of 51 Peg, a giant planet in a 4-day orbit, the field of exoplanets continues to produce discoveries that surprise and astound astronomers.
