Polarization measurements of EAS radio emission with the LOPES experiment — •P.G. Isar — Karlsruhe Institute of Technology/IK

Extensive air showers (EAS) are accompanied by emission of radio waves. Radio detection of EAS is an important issue because it can help in the understanding of the energy spectrum and mass composition of high energy cosmic rays. The LOPES experiment is a radio antenna array designed to perform radio measurements of EAS in the frequency range of 40 - 80 MHz. It is located at the site of the particle detector array KASCADE-Grande, which provides the well-calibrated EAS information. The goal of LOPES (LOfar PrototypE Station) is to understand characteristic features of the radio emission where polarization measurements play an important role. By measuring the east-west and the north-south components of the electric field, the geo-synchrotron process which is the main radio emission mechanism of EAS is tested. Dependencies of the field strength in each polarization direction on shower parameters like arrival direction or primary energy will be discussed as well as characteristics of the polarization vector.
