Searching for massive top quark resonances with the ATLAS detector at the LHC — •Elin Bergeaas Kuutmann — DESY, Zeuthen, Germany

The ATLAS detector at the LHC began data taking of high-energy collisions in December 2009, which marks the start of a new era of precision measurements of the Standard Model and searches for physics beyond the currently established theories. In several proposed extensions of the Standard Model (such as extra dimensions, the little Higgs scenario or technicolour) new heavy gauge bosons emerge, heavy enough to decay into top quark pairs (tt).

When massive (M>1 TeV) particles decay into tt, the top quarks are boosted and the decay products often become merged in the detector. In such a case, the standard top reconstruction algorithms fail. In this talk, a method for reconstructing boosted top quark pairs in the semi-leptonic channel using jet top-tagging is described. With this method applied to 200 pb−1 of √s=10 TeV data, a narrow uncoloured top pair resonance (Z) in the mass range 1−2 TeV could be excluded (or discovered) at the 95% CL, if its σ × BR(tt) exceeds a few picobarns.
