ATLAS Muon Spectrometer Alignment with Tracks — •Steffen Kaiser, Oliver Kortner, Hubert Kroha, and Igor Potrap — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, Munich, Germany

The muon spectrometer of the ATLAS experiment is designed to measure muon momenta of up to 1 TeV with a resolution of better than 10 %. It consists of three layers of muon chambers located in a toroidal field of superconducting air-core magnets. To achieve the desired momentum resolution, the muon chambers have to be aligned with an accuracy of better than 30 µm in the track bending plane. An optical alignment system continuously measures chamber movements and deformations during detector operation. However, about one half of the muon chambers in the barrel part of the muon spectrometer is not equipped with optical alignment sensors. A global least-square algorithm for the alignment of muon chambers with respect to optically aligned chambers using muon tracks in the overlap regions has been developed. The performance has been tested with simulated curved muon tracks of different momenta.
